Technical Lecture 10/22 -- ASCE Met Section Geotechnical Group

The ASCE Met Section Geotechnical Group will be holding its first Technical Lecture of the season on Thursday October 23, 2008, 5:30 PM at the General Society for Mechanics and Tradesmen located at 20 West 44th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues). The topic is "Excavation and Underpinning Practices" by Timothy D. Lynch, Chief Engineer, New York City Department of Buildings, Excavation Unit and Major Renovations Unit.

24th Central Pennsylvania Geotechnical Conference

The 24th Central Pennsylvania Geotechnical Conference is issuing a “Call for Papers” focusing on Geotechnical case histories and advances in Geotechnical
Engineering. Of particular interest are topics related to value engineering and
working within the current economic constraints resulting from increased
energy costs and recent financial developments on projects such as:

• Infrastructure
• Dams and levees
• Water treatment
• Storm water management
• Retaining walls
• Temporary excavation support

Deadline for abstract submission is November 14, 2008.  Abstracts should have 300 - 500 words.

Geo-Institute Geotechnical Special Publication: The Art of Foundation Engineering Practice

The Geo-Institute is soliciting abstracts for technical papers to be considered for inclusion in the Geotechnical Special Publication (GSP) honoring Clyde N. Baker, Jr., P.E., S.E., Hon.M.ASCE.  The GSP will be titled The Art of Foundation Engineering Practice; Mohamad Hussein, J. Brian Anderson, and William Camp, III, Editors.  It will be published in 2010 during the Geo-Institute annual meeting.

Technical papers covering all aspects of foundation engineering — research, structural and geotechnical design, construction practices, testing, and performance — will be considered.  Papers documenting case histories are particularly welcome.

Deadline for abstract submission is November 30, 2008.  Abstracts should have between 300–400 words.
